The Story Behind the Photo

Rising Moon over Half Dome

This iconic shot was taken in the early evening of February 18th, 2019 about a 1/2 hour after sunset.  I used two apps to help get this shot. Photopills told me when the moon would rise in Yosemite Valley on that day and with an app called Skyguide I was able to hold up my phone to Half Dome and see exactly where the moon would rise which helped me compose the shot.   While everyone else were busy shooting the “firefall” on the opposite side of the Valley, We was content to experience the supermoon rise in the solitude of Cooks Meadow. It was amazing!
